Visiting O'Reilly site, I found an interesting article related to ONJava.com: Playing Movies in a Java 3D World (and part 2).
It mentions the Java Media Framework (JMF) for part of the article. It also makes mention of QuickTime for Java which also has possibilties.
This gives hope of improved animation in the Java realm.
